The WCFFA Annual Fruit Sale is now on.  We are featuring fresh Oranges, Grapefruit and Tangeloes, several varieties of Washington Apples as well as D’anjou Pears and Fresh Pineapple.  Members will also be offering Colby, CoJack, Cheddar, American and Mozarella Cheese as well as several flavors of Butter Braid Frozen pastries.  Orders can be submitted through November 17, 2010 and fruit will be delivered the week of December 7, 2010.

Renner Strikes Gold in National AgriScience Fair

West Central sophomore Liz Renner recently represented South Dakota in the National FFA AgriScience Fair during the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.

Renner competed in the Environmental Science Division and was awarded a gold medal, making her one of the top five agriscientists in her division.

589 agriculturally based science projects were featured during the National AgriScience Fair.

Renner won her division of the South Dakota AgriScience Fair in April, earning her a berth in the National AgriScience Fair.

83rd National FFA Convention

Thirteen members of the West Central FFA Chapter recently attended the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN.

West Central FFA members were among more than 54,000 in attendance at the annual event.  Members attended convention sessions, listened to several keynote speakers, watched the finals of the Extemp Speaking, Prepared Public Speaking, Market Plan, Agricultural Issues and Parliamentary Procedure Career Development Events.   Members also viewed exhibits at the National AgriScience Fair.  Students got the opportunity to visit with professionals in a host of agricultural careers at the Agricultural Career Show as well as checking out numerous colleges and universities each offering degrees and education in the field of agriculture.   Students also have the chance to attend leadership and educational workshops sponsored by industry, the National FFA Alumni Association and the National FFA Organization.

A highlight of convention for South Dakota FFA members was witnessing the election of Wyatt Dejong of Winner, SD as National Central Region Vice President.  Wyatt is the fourth South Dakota FFA member to be elected to serve as a National FFA Officer in the past 83 years.  During his year of service, Wyatt will travel more than 100,000 miles and spend 305-330 days traveling and meeting FFA members and sponsors from across the country.

The team of 6 national officers are elected through an interview process by a nominating committee of 9 state officers from around the country.  The week-long process is grueling and delves into the personality traits, agricultural knowledge and speaking ability of each candidate.

FFA members from all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands were in attendance in Indianapolis.

National Extemporaneous Speaking Results

Joe Schartz is congratulated by a sponsor from the American Farm Bureau during the Extemp Speaking Awards Dinner in Indianapolis, IN.

Joe Schartz was awarded a silver medal in the National FFA Extemporaneous Speaking Career Development Event during the 83rd National FFA Convention.

Members competing in the Extemp Speaking CDE test their poise and their ability to think on their feet. A topic is drawn by each speaker, then the participant is given 30 minutes to prepare a 4 – 6 minute speech. Following each presentation the competitors are asked 5 minutes worth of questions by the judges. Questions are based on the topic and the material presented by the speaker.

A Silver ranking in this event means that Joe was one of the top 16 speakers in the country!

National Horse CDE Results

The WCFFA Horse Evaluation CDE team attended their awards breakfast this morning.   The scores were amazingly close.  Four points separated 12 placings in the individual competition.  In the Oral Reasons results, the top placing person dropped less than 10 points in the entire competition.

The results for West Central FFA members are as follows:

Spencer Kurtz – Gold Medal

Ashley Fritz – Silver Medal

Melissa VanDerWerff – Silver Medal

Stephanie Howey – Silver Medal

In the team competition the WCFFA members earned a Silver Medal.

Extemp Semi-Finals

Joe drew the topic “What is your role in addressing misconceptions in Agriculture?
Some of you may be familiar with the story about their family hunting dog, Joe, getting lost when Joe, the boy, was three years Old. That’s the story Joe opened with. His time was 5:47 and he nailed his questions. He will compete in at the semi-final round this afternoon.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010~National FFA Convention

Greetings from the 83rd National FFA Convention!

Today is Wednesday and our schedule in Indy is a busy one.  The Horse Team, Joe, Anthony and Mrs. Petersen headed out at 6:15 this morning for competition.  Joe will speak in preliminary rounds beginning at 10.  There is also a prelim round at 8.  The top 8 speakers from each of the 8 and 10 O’Clock rounds will advance to the semi finals which will begin at 1:00 p.m. We will keep you posted on how things go for the golden tongued one!

Mr. Nettifee and the remainder of the chapter headed downtown this morning and we will all be listening to Joe Schartz in his preliminary round of the Extemporaneous Speaking CDE.

Liz Renner will be setting up her AgriScience Fair display at Lucas Oil Stadium and will compete on Thursday.

Leonard Meyer, graduate of Humboldt High School and current resident of Indiana made the trip into downtown Indy to meet the chapter and listen to Joe as well.  Leonard was also in attendance in April when Joe competed in the American Legion Oratory Competition here in Indianapolis.

Love of Horses Takes Team to Nationals

Four West Central FFA members have met their goals head on and have advanced to national competition.  The Horse Evaluation CDE (Career Development Event) Team of Ashley Fritz, Steph Howey, Spencer Kurtz and Melissa VanDerWerff will compete in the National Horse Evaluation CDE in October in Indianapolis, Indiana during the 83rd National FFA Convention.  The team members will judge several halter and performance classes analyzing the conformation of the animals, their movement, soundness and the ability of the riders.  Members will demonstrate their ability to reason and communicate about equine science through a team problem solving activity and individually evaluating classes and justifying their selections through oral reasons.  The National Horse Evaluation CDE is sponsored by Ram Trucks, Kent Feeds, Tractor Supply Company  and Wahl Clipper  Corporation.  Members will compete for $5500 in scholarships awarded to top individuals and teams.

The members of the Horse CDE Team advanced to national competition by winning the Horse Evaluation CDE on the state level during the 2009-2010 school year.  They are coached and advised by West Central Agricultural Education Instructor and FFA Advisor Linda Petersen.

Schartz to Speak on National Stage

Joe Schartz will compete in the National Extemporaneous Speaking CDE. Event participants are given 30 minutes to prepare a speech on a general agricultural topic.  The speech must be four to six minutes in length.  At the conclusion of the speech, the judges may question the speaker for five minutes.  Finalists are selected based on speech delivery, content and responses to the questions.  National contestants will advance through preliminary and semifinal rounds with the top four speakers competing in the final national even.  FFA members competing in the Extemporaneous Speaking CDE are exceptional at organizing their thoughts into a comprehensive and logical presentation, additionally building their confidence, poise and presentation skills.  The Extemporaneous Speaking CDE is sponsored by the American Farm Bureau Federation.  Schartz will compete for $4000 in scholarship money during the event.

Schartz will compete during the 83rd National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, IN October 19 – 24, 2010.  He is a member of the West Central FFA Chapter and is advised and coached by Linda Petersen

Science Takes Renner to Nationals

Liz Renner will take her love of Science to the next level competing in the National AgriScience Fair.  Renner earned a berth in the AgriScience Fair after winning the Environmental Science Division during the State AgriScience Fair.  Renner will present her research and findings to a panel of judges.  She will be judged based on the scientific approach, experimental research, conclusions, recommendations and analysis of data and a visual display and written abstract that will describe her research and findings.

Competition will take place in Indianapolis, Indiana during the 83rd National FFA Convention October 19 – 24, 2010.
